"We have to talk of the future, but we've never seen it before before" said Dr. Richard Whitefield, the head in charge of the University of Birmingham's research project.

The key to deciphering the clues was synthesized in the 1960s as a result of tests conducted in the 1970s of DNA methylation experiments in laboratories around the world.

These tests detected the methylation patterns in hair from people living in the U.K., the U.S., Sweden and India. The results were startling enough that scientists began to investigate.

Since then, a number of questions have arisen, including why DNA methylation patterns were not discovered just a few decades ago when scientists would not have suspected a common genetic marker such as the XX chromosome, which encodes information about genetic mutations.

One possibility is that the X chromosome is the result of mutation in the FQTL8 gene. One possible explanation is that, as of now, the XX chromosome has not been identified as the cause of the X chromosome mutation, said Whitefield of the University of Birmingham.

Other possibilities are that scientists were not looking for the first X chromosome but rather for a mutation in the genetic basis for the gene, which is linked to disorders such as Alzheimer's, Parkinson's , Alzheimer's-like thinking and schizophrenia.
